Students Use IPads In Band With No Instruments

Anyone walking by B.D. ullett Elementary School’s music
room on Monday afternoons will hear the (very loud)
sounds of a rock band - guitars, drums, keyboard, plus
the young female voice of a lead singer rocking out.
What passers-by can’t tell from the outside is that no one inside
is playing an actual instrument. Instead, the fourth and fth grade
students comprising the band are “playing” iPads,
which have been velcro’d to patrol belts strapped around their
shoulders and waists.
“It’s the only way I could gure out how to do it,” said Tim
Hamand, the school’s music teacher, referring to the iPad/velcro/
patrol belt contraptions. Sure, the guitarists don’t have actual
strings to strum, but they have virtual ones running the length
of the iPad screen.
