Imagine a list of your accomplishments:
members during Saint Patrick’s Day weekend.
kindness in our community.
Imagine the list continues to grow each week.
Imagine writing this list before your 5th birthday.
This is the list of the members of The Happy Helpers. Happy Helpers
is a service-learning program at the Tybee Island YMCA & Recreation
Department for young children (toddlers & preschoolers).
The Helpers meet every Wednesday during the school year to complete
volunteer work that serves the local community. The program introduces
students to common community challenges that help to advance thinking
and develop compassion through project-based learning. These young
citizens earn a sense of accomplishment by making real contributions
to our Tybee Island Community.
If you know of a child who may be interested in participating in The
Happy Helpers, registration will open in August. If you are interested
in volunteering or helping fund the program, donations are gladly and
gratefully accepted via our Annual Campaign. Contact Laura Schmarkey
at the Tybee YMCA & Recreation Department for information at 912-
786-9622 or Laura.schmarkey@ymcaofcoastalga.org.

Well, as everyone has undoubtedly realized at this point, the
summer is creeping in. Spring Breakers from all over have taken
over the beach. Maybe by the time you read this it’ll even be hot
out. Things have definitely stepped up for us over here. Our shifts
are moving and staying busy from the time we clock in right up
until we are able to go home. I was trying to think of a good story
to give you guys this month, but unfortunately everything since
St. Patrick’s Day has become a blur of dealing with drunk people
and parking complaints. So I thought instead of giving you a
story, I’d try to offer up some advice for the coming summer
months.
To start with, the beach is packed just about every day that has
nice weather. If you’re planning a beach day and you can’t walk
there, I’d recommend calling a cab or getting there early to avoid
any parking headaches. We have all our beach rules posted on
signs at every crossover and public entrance. If you’ve never
taken the time to read them, next time you go out, take a look.
That will avoid you having to deal with us while you’re trying to
enjoy your day. And if you plan on having some drinks while
you’re out there, try to work some water in there as well. Even
the most experienced drinkers can get overcome by that mix of
sun and booze. No matter how much fun your friends say you are
when you’re drunk, the rest of us are sick of it.
Finally, if you are going to hit the booze, make sure you’re not
driving. So far this year, our traffic unit has met 36 people who
thought it would be alright if they drove. If we catch you, we will
arrest and take your license. The island is small and there are a
ton of cab companies around who will be more than happy to
drive you home. It definitely beats out all the money it costs and
how awkward it is to see the cop who arrested you all the time,
because again, this is a really small island.
I hope everyone enjoys their summer, and as always let us know
if you need anything.
