Hyde
Sparsely populated but often visited, it might be North Carolina’s least known
yet most historically important county. Formed from Bath County in 1705,
Hyde was initially named Wickham Precinct, for then Governor John
Archdale’s ancestral home in England. In 1712, it became Hyde Precinct, in
honor of the current governor and lord proprietor of North Carolina, Edward
Hyde. When Bath County was abolished in 1739, the precinct’s name was
changed to Hyde County. In 1745 and 1823 parts of Currituck were annexed
to Hyde.
