Tyrrell County was annexed into a separate entity in 1729 so that its citizens would have
a less arduous trip to court. The precinct was named for Sir John Tyrrell, a Lord Proprietor.
Its landscape is bordered by the Alligator River, Albemarle Sound and Scuppernong River.
Historically it was marshlands, swamp and woodland. It now boasts 75,000 acres of
agriculture, a fishing trade and over 200,000 acres of nature preserves. It is home to
3,700 residents and black bear, red wolf and protected pitcher plants.
