Chowan
Chowan County is one of the four original precincts. Chowan is named
after the Chowanoke Native American word, “People of the South.” It is the
smallest county in North Carolina in area, but boasts of its rich history as the
colonial Port of Roanoke. Edenton was the first official capital of the province of
North Carolina and is home to the most intact colonial courthouse in the United
States and was also a site of the Underground Maritime Railroad.
