Washington
Washington County was formed in 1799 from the neighboring Tyrrell County. It is
named for George Washington, who died that same year. It is home to history, BIG bears
and more, including Lake Phelps, Pettigrew State Park, Somerset Place, Pocosin Lakes
NWR, Gateway to the Roanoke River Delta with 50 miles of shoreline within 5 miles of
Plymouth, and 4 museums on the Plymouth waterfront. It is where adventures begin!
