350th History
Welcome to the Historic Passport Booklet for “Old
Albemarle.”
In 1663, King Charles II in the Carolina Charter gave
what is today North and South Carolina to eight Lord
Proprietors. In 1668 the area of Albemarle became four
precincts: Currituck, Pasquotank, Perquimans, and
Chowan. These precincts became the first counties of
North Carolina and out of these counties came the 16
counties of today’s Northeastern North Carolina.
