“A New School”
by Rebekah King
We meet up at Purple Penguin to congratulate
Peyton on her win with the “Show your Strength”
2018 Young Authors Writing Project. My son
Wesley and I join Christina and her daughter
Peyton to talk about the big win over frozen
yogurt. Peyton’s cup swirls marshmallows,
gummies, and sprinkles on top of birthday
cake yogurt while Wesley fills his cup with
blended Strawberry and pomegranate topped in
strawberries, kiwi, chocolate chips—all topped
in hard shell. Our conversations likewise swirl
various topics with our little students who talk
about school, sports, pets, family, friends and
good times shared. We settle outside in the
warm sunshine with cool treats and our sweets.
We gather for the best treat of all—to interview
Peyton who joined other local students at
Sandhills Community College to be honored for
their outstanding writing by the Moore County
Reading Association. Winning the hearts of all
with her essay entitled, “A New School,” Peyton
begins to tell me all about her first year at the
new school while thoughts of summertime fun
now bring smiles at school’s end.
Her essay entitled, “A New School” begins,“It
was difficult for me to start at a new school. It
was hard, and I thought that I was not going to
make any new friends. I thought I was going to
hate school. I thought I was going to be lonely.
I did not want to go to the new school. One day
I realized that I had no choice, and I needed to
make the best of it. I thought I just needed to be
strong and confident. I came to my new school
with the right attitude and tried my best to
make friends. I smiled and waved at people, and
it turned out that was all it took. I made friends
and discovered that I loved my new school. I just
had to believe in myself.”
Join us for a treat as Peyton fills us in on her
exciting win and all things Peyton.
How old are you? Eight.
Where do you attend school? Southern Pines
Elementary, third grade.
Do you like school? Nah. (Ha! She is so funny!
And truthful!)
Favorite subject? Science. We just got
through learning about planets.
What do you do for fun? I love to swim!
Do you like sports? YES! We just finished
basketball, and now we’re starting softball.
What do you do for fun? Play with my dogs.
I have seven; five of them are hunting dogs, two
of them are not. Corgis are my dream dog! We
have a dog park where we live, and there’s a lady
who owns a corgi. Whenever I come home from
school and see her down there with her corgi,
I’ll throw my book-bag into my mom’s arms and
run to see the dog.
Favorite Park? Camelot.
Favorite color? Blue. It used to be orange.
Favorite book? Dog Man. It’s about this dog
who is a cop, but there’s this cat named Petey
who’s an evil scientist. Dog Man is always trying
to put the cat in jail, but the cat always escapes
with either an invisible spray or live spray which
makes things come alive. One day Petey puts a
bomb in the jail which blows up accidentally
because he forgot that dogs are colored blind! As
the hospital rescues victims, a body and a head
come together to create—Dog Man.
Favorite animal? Dog.
Tell me about your family. My family is very
weird, funny, and we hate cats—well, my mom
does.
Do you like your teacher? YES! She’s very
funny, but she’s retiring soon. We have math
papers, and whenever we get done going over
them, we get to draw a picture on the top of our
paper.
Tell me about the essay assignment. We had
to write a story about showing our strength in
overcoming something—to overcome a fear
with strength. Once the stories were written, the
principal chose his favorites that were passed on
to the Young Authors Association who chose the
final winners.
What did you overcome? My fear about
going to a new school! My friend wrote about
a roller coaster challenge where he overcame a
fear of roller coasters which I will never, ever do
because I’m scared of heights!
What did you learn from this project? That
it’s good to try new things!
Favorite memory from your year at the
new school? The penny drive was my favorite
thing! There was this contest to bring pennies
to school to help kids who don’t have food and
need money for stuff. We all brought money to
help and whatever class raised the most money
enjoyed a celebration treat!
Your winning essay was celebrated at
Sandhills Community College? All the schools
from all over the county attended the event!
Many students were chosen from each school;
our school earned 20 awards!
What would you like to be when you grow
up? A dolphin trainer! And I’m going to work
at Ulta, so when my mom comes by to get
her make-up, then I’m going to give her free
discounts! :)
What does your mommy do for a career? She
is a dental hygienist.
And your daddy? He is a barber. Peyton’s
family owns and operates Headquarters
Barbershop and Shave Lounge, Whispering
Pines.
What advice would you give to other young
kids overcoming a fear? Listen to your heart
and believe in yourself.
Do you have big plans for the summer? I’m
going to summer camp and basketball camp.
The interview ends at summertime where
the fun begins for all of our local students who
should follow Peyton’s advice, “Listen to your
heart and believe in yourself.” As Peyton runs
home to catch a glimpse of her dream dog, and
Wesley races home to play some football with his
brothers, our community holds great promise!
Remembering the wisdom shared from our
young author who bravely conquered her fear
of attending a new school states, “I came to my
new school with the right attitude and tried
my best to make friends. I smiled and waved at
people, and it turned out that was all it took.
I made friends and discovered that I loved my
new school. I just had to believe in myself.”
No matter your “new school” that presents in
a new job, a new neighborhood, a new challenge,
make the best of it with strength, confidence,
and the right attitude! Along with lots of smiles
and waves to friends!
Congratulations, Peyton! Thank you for
sharing such inspiration!
