Bug House
Sweet Summertime is the best time to make this
craft as insects are as plentiful as the sunshine!
Gather supplies:
• Empty juice bottle
• Remnant of wire screen
• Duct tape
• Hot glue gun, glue stick
• A summer morning to find lots of creepy crawlies!
Let’s get started:
• Once you’ve enjoyed the juice, rinse out the
plastic bottle, clean off any wraps or labels, and
recycle it into a bug house. • Lay the bottle on its
side and cut out a rectangle from the side facing
up. • Trim a piece of wire screen to cover the cut-out
hole. • Using duct tape, wrap the perimeter of the
wire screen for a protected edge. • Gather small
sticks, moss, rocks, little pieces of nature to mimic a
bug’s natural habitat. • Once the habitat is settled,
glue the wire screen onto the hole in the top. • Go
outside and catch the perfect bugs! Look under
logs, rocks, straw to discover entire worlds existing
alongside your own! Enjoy watching your bugs as
they make a new home in their new house.
Hale Cottage, 1895
Built in 1895, by James W. Tufts for $1850 dollars,
the Hale Cottage lives on 85 Cherokee Road. Hosting
renters visiting Pinehurst, the Hale Cottage was
named for Tufts’ good friend Dr. Edward Everette Hale.
A well-known author and clergyman, Dr. Hale became
the first Village pastor. Dr. Hale also became a chaplain
for the US Senate serving from 1903 until his death
in 1909. While honored with the namesake of the
Hale Cottage, Dr. Hale typically stayed at the Holly Inn.
In 1914, G. M. Howard became the first of many
homeowners to find their dreams fulfilled in updates
and renovations. A beautiful example of the early
Pinehurst Cottages, the Hale sits sweetly on Cherokee.
