School is out! Hooray! But that doesn’t mean that the
reading should stop! Be sure to sign up for the Summer
Reading program at your local library; if you can’t make
it to the library, then check out the Bookmobile for
some SUMMER FUN!
Alice Thomas, Director of the Moore County
Library shares the following Bookmobile info:
"The bookmobile service was started in the 1940s
by the Works Progress Administration. The first
bookmobile had a set of revolving shelves which
held about 800 books. Mrs. Dorothy Avery was Moore
County’s first bookmobile driver, and she visited every
community and all county schools.
In the years that followed, a variety of vehicles served,
including a converted bread truck! Another ‘library
on wheels’ had no air conditioning, and thoughtful
patrons often greeted the bookmobile driver with ice
water during the summer. In 1986, a new bookmobile
offered even greater book capacity, air conditioning,
handrails, lighting, and carpeting; it served for 21 years
and logged over 250,000 miles.
In addition to books, today’s bookmobile purchased
in 2007, carries DVDs, audiobooks, Nooks, and Smart
Start educational kits."
