Previously with closed adoptions, efforts
to maintain anonymity for all parties
resulted in the adoptee having limited or no
information about their heritage. We now
recognize that this type of secrecy serves
no one’s best interest and have made
changes in the way we perform adoptions.
Today’s private adoptions are evolving with
an increase in openness. More information
is being shared between members of the
adoption triad, and relationships are being
maintained over time.
I also want to mention public adoptions
through the Department of Children and
Families. Far too many children are being
removed from their homes. In most cases
it is necessary and appropriate for the
child’s safety.
I would prefer to look to the church, and
our very own family institution, to step up
and care for children who are removed
from their families. At this point, it is
necessary to rely on our state government
to oversee the removal of children from
their homes and placement into foster
homes, but my hope is that we can bridge
the gap between private adoptions and
the Department of Children and Families,
therefore reducing the number of children
that languish in our foster care system.
Over the years we have learned a lot
about adoption. Our practices have
evolved to make adoption better for all
members of the adoption triad.
While the international
sector still has some
improvements to be
made, domestic
adoptions are on
the rise and are
becoming more
open. Hopefully
throughout the
years to come
we will continue to learn ways to improve
our practices even more, and strive to
bridge gaps between private adoptions
and foster care.
Adoption has many complexities, the
simple truth is, to be a parent, children
don’t have to come from you, they come
through you.
