DEAN
THE FROM Dear Alumni and Friends,
Joseph A. Tyndall, MD, MPH
Interim Dean It is with a deep sense of history, gratitude and appreciation that I have served as the interim dean of
the UF College of Medicine over the last several months. I came to UF more than 10 years ago, and as
chair of the department of emergency medicine, along with my years on the UF Health Shands Board
of Directors, I have witnessed the growth and the progress made under the stable and vital leadership
of Dean Michael Good, MD, and the transformative leadership of David Guzick, MD, PhD, as senior vice
president of health affairs at UF and president of UF Health. It is a privilege to carry on this work and
support the College of Medicine in my new role.
I continue to be inspired by the enthusiasm of all of our faculty and staff in the ever-present mission of
improving the health and well-being of all of our communities through the pillar missions of education,
research and the highest quality of empathetic clinical care. I am inspired by our patients' resilience and
their faith in our health system to provide the care they need.
I could not be prouder of the outstanding accomplishments achieved at the UF College of Medicine
in 2018. Nearly 30 percent of our medical school graduates entered residency training programs
at top 10 medical schools, and grant awards from the National Institutes of Health to UF College of
Medicine researchers hit a historic high of more than $100 million for the second consecutive year.
These achievements are indicative of our progress toward driving medical discovery and preparing
tomorrow’s physician work force. The future of the UF College of Medicine is brighter than ever as we
push ourselves to seek out new opportunities, unlock organizational potential and continue our climb
as a world-class institution for training the next generation of educators, scientists and clinicians.
This winter edition of Florida Physician embraces our history, highlights our values and celebrates who
we are. We celebrate the diversity of those who have made indelible impacts on our way of thinking
and helped to fuel our relentless passion in pursuit of solving problems, driving discovery and moving
medicine forward to a healthier generation for all.
Our journey has been remarkable. I am proud of what we have become, and I look forward to a future of
working with all of our leaders, faculty, staff, students and alumni to build on our growth and reputation
as a premier college of medicine and academic health center. We will continue the momentum and seek
the opportunities that will ready us for the next decade of leadership in The Gator Nation.
