Health & Choices
Provided by Diane Giermek
We tend to go through our day to day lives doing most things
without much thought…it’s just our routine. That can be very
beneficial when our lives and jobs can demand so much that we
HAVE to focus on. Like when we first learned to drive, we had to
think about every action and choice…gas, brake, yield! And now,
it’s just second nature.
It can also work to our detriment. We get up, grab a coffee, and
get to work. It’s too easy to grab a meal at a drive through. We
don’t think to plan ahead for most meals, let alone consider the
nutrition we need, and may not be getting.
Our life is comprised of choices, made consciously or unconsciously.
We often think in terms of what we can add to our lives to be
healthier…like walking more, strength training or eating more
vegetables. And those are all very good. But sometimes letting go
is a good choice!
I remember, almost 20 years ago, when I moved to Waynesville, a
few of my friends were trying to eat healthier and decided to give
up sugar. I thought, “Not me, I like dessert too much!” But then
about a year later I was trying to lose some weight and thought I’d
give it a try. One of my regular treats was to get a large coffee at
Panacea…with 4 packs of sugar!
Research has shown that some people are better going cold turkey
and others are more successful when they taper off. Cold turkey
was not for me, so I started with 3 packs. And then when I was
ready, I went to two. It took about 6 months to get to where I used
one pack or no sugar at all.
In 18 years, that one small choice meant 19,656 less packets of
sugar! Plus, I craved sugar less so I ended up eating less sweets
overall. All that, from one seemingly small choice.
