Ecotourism: A Greener Way to Travel
By Kristy Mayer
Ecotourism is a big deal in travel destinations like Tybee Island, but what exactly is ecotourism? The International Ecotourism Society defines Ecotourism as
being “responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people.”
Being an Eco-tourist means that you care about the local environment and the local community that you are visiting. There are many ways that you can enjoy
the natural wonders of Tybee Island, along with other places you travel to, and interact in an eco-friendly way. Here are some fun and eco-friendly activities
that you can enjoy today!
Bike Tours
Let the wind blow through your hair and see the whole island with the ‘top down!’ Cruise trails that no other cars, scooters, and mopeds can take. Pedal along
the water line and get a close encounter with your natural surroundings, no carbon footprint required. You can easily bike around the whole Island of Tybee.
It’s good for you and it’s good for the environment!
Tybee Beach Ecology Trip
Take yourself, or book an educational experience with an expert, for a beach walk that includes high and low tide beachcombing and exploring tide pools
where you will find extraordinary creatures that call these beautiful beaches and waters home. Check out the Tybee Island Marine Science Center first, so you
know what you might encounter.
Grab a Board
Boarding isn’t just for surfers like Kelly Slater any more. Boards allow you to be one with nature by bringing you close to the water, all while getting in a killer
workout. Without the loud noise of the motor, you will be able to enjoy nature fully with all five senses. What will you hear, see, feel, smell and taste while out
in nature? With so many options these days, people of all types are getting on board. Whether it’s Surf, SUP, Boogie, or Body boards, these very eco-friendly
activities will help you get submerged in the island life.
Kayak Attack
Maybe you want a little more stability than a board, and want to be close to the water, but not totally submerged. Kayaking is another great way to enjoy the
water and local ecosystem in a very upfront and personal way. You are the propeller of these boats so again, no carbon footprint required. Equipped with your
eco-friendly water bottle and plastic free reusable straws, you are ready to explore uncharted territory without disturbing the homes of the animals that live
here year round.
Just Keep Swimming
The ultimate summer eco-friendly activity does not require any man-made tools. Use your body to propel through the waters for a relaxing swim. Be sure
to swim in areas that have been deemed safe for swimming. Be aware of places that may have dangerous rip tides and undertows. Make sure to grab your
environmentally friendly sunscreen, one that won’t damage the reefs and waters and use SPF clothing to cover up whenever possible. Avoid bringing plastic
and trash to outdoor events, so it doesn’t accidentally get left behind or end up in the water.
Summertime is wonderful for exploring new areas with friends and family. Long days and warm nights. Stunning sunrises and sunsets. Now that you know
how to be the best Eco-tourist, you can enjoy these new experiences and feel confident that you are leaving nothing behind but your footprints.
