How do you even start to teach someone how to surf? I mean, that has
got to be born and bred into someone from the get go. You don’t just buy
a board and go out there. That is not how this works. Is it? The good news
for us though is that Turner Horton was born to surf and decided to hang
ten with us to teach us mere mortals how to stand upright and not drink
the ocean, but glide on top of it like the rock stars we know we are! I have
always admired Turner from afar - that whole balancing thing. Lucky for us,
I got a chance to sit down with the man and get the details. Off we go…
Born and raised in SAV, Turner has his dad to thank for his love of water
and subsequent surfing career … although it started out rough when Dad
got his son a board that was too short. There was lots of frustration to
follow with constant wipe-outs! Once the board got adjusted to the height
of this high school freshman, there was nothing holding him back! Except
… music! Enrolled in Savannah Arts, the trumpet was the instrument of
the future. Well, until Georgia Southern, when the ukulele became the
instrument! Obtaining a Hope Scholarship (huge accomplishment there!!),
Turner went off to college to do his thing, but the water always called and
beckoned to him, and in 2010 a friend said, ‘Hey, what do you think about
Hawaii?’ (LOVE those friends!!) and off he went!
Honing his surfing skills in Hawaii and playing music, Turner was living
the dream. Although, Tybee kept calling him and as we all know, Tybee has
that effect on us. Having been working with the YMCA throughout his life,
Turner always kept true to his roots even when he was living in Alohaland.
Following his first 4 years spent in Hawaii, Turner faithfully returned to

Tybee to help run the summer surf camps at the Y. In 2017, Turner came
back for good and Tybee couldn’t be happier!
Turner is an excellent teacher! Patient, kind and tolerant. Turner says,
“You know something completely when you can teach it to other people.”
That’s true-blue right there. This dude is a bad-ass surfer and if he can get
my uncoordinated butt up on a board, then miracles really do happen. I
never thought I would be a surfer chick, but hey, if I can do it, trust me, you
can too and have a great story to tell!
Turner is available for both private and group lessons seven days a week.
He accepts all ages from 1 to infinity and beyond! He is fully certified with
all the appropriate stuff and thoroughly loves what he does! He also loves
coordinating surf parties, and did I mention he also gives music lessons?
The ukulele is the instrument of choice, but the trumpet is welcome too!
