HIGH POINTE STUDENTS TAKE PART IN MID-DAY MOVEMENT
After lunch at High Pointe
Elementary, students get to destress
by participating in mid-day
movement, which includes sensory
exercises to help students develop
their fine motor and gross motor
skills.
After implementing mid-day
movement, lunch room disruptions
and issues have been reduced by
95%. Students get to go outside and
focus on moving by playing with
hoola-hoops, jumping on stepping
stones, playing catch, and much
more.
The expectation that is set before
students are allowed to participate
in mid-day movement is that they
have a clean tray, are kind to the
people around them, and follow the
rule of being safe, kind, and
responsible.
The opportunity to participate in
mid-day movement has also shown
the importance of using manors and
showing respect to others.
High Pointe first-grade teachers felt
that there was a need for sensory
movement and exercisesfor the
students to be able to develop their
fine motor and gross motor skills
that they need for their academic
learning as well as regulating their
sensory systems.
This need was then implemented
into mid-day movement to help
students channel their energy into
something active rather than getting
rid of that energy in the cafeteria or
disrupting the learning of their
classmates during instruction time.
