Florida Native Cultivars
FANN takes great care to encourage correct and specific identification
of plant species and origin. Plant provenance is important to us and
to our customers, for the preservation of genetic diversity, support of
local insects and wildlife, and performance of plants in the landscape.
Species that range widely throughout the country are being hybridized
and sold everywhere, often to
great disappointment in the landscape.
Many horticultural cultivars continue to
be introduced with little or no documentation
on the origin of the plants. Without
that information, we cannot make a determination
as to whether these can be
considered native or not. Thus, we will
not list such plants as Florida natives.
FANN POLICY
Listing of Cultivars
The Florida Association of Native Nurseries (FANN) supports the increased
use of regional seed source plant stock for regional restoration
and landscape projects, when possible. Further, FANN supports
the use of Florida native species for Florida planting projects.
Many Florida native species and their cultivars naturally occur
beyond the state’s political boundaries. FANN recognizes that certain
ecoregions, as defined by The Nature Conservancy, namely the
South Atlantic Coastal Plain and the Eastern Gulf Coastal Plain, extend
beyond Florida’s boundaries. Additional Florida ecoregions
are the Florida Peninsula and Tropical Florida. Ecoregions are defined
as areas of relatively homogeneous climate, topography, geology
and vegetation.
FANN finds naturally occurring cultivars of Florida native
species occurring within these ecoregions acceptable for listing in
the association directory. Mechanically hybridized plant stock shall
be excluded from our listings. Customers should be informed that
differences in latitude, soils and microclimate make some plant selections
and their cultivars more or less suitable for their location.
FANN members should know the origin of their stock and provide
consumers this information upon request.
