I’LL NEVER TELL
By Catherine McKenzie
In 1998, Camp Macaw is owned and operated by Pete and Ingrid
MacAllister. Their five children, Ryan, Margaux, Mary and twins Liddie and
Kate, serve as camp counselors. There’s also Sean, a groundskeeper that
was taken in by the MacAllisters at an early age. Tragically that summer,
Amanda, a seventeen-year old camp counselor, washed ashore in a canoe
with a bashed in head, but no one was ever charged with the crime.
Fast forward twenty years and the five siblings are arriving back at Camp
Macaw for a memorial service after the sudden death of their parents.
They’re also there for the reading of the will and to decide if they will
keep the prime real estate that the camp sits on or if they will sell. When
the lawyer arrives for the reading, they are surprised to learn of a strange
stipulation that their father put in as a condition to the will. It seems that Mr.
MacAllister was certain that Ryan, his only son, was the one responsible for
Amanda’s injuries so many years ago. He has instructed his other children
to vote on whether Ryan should receive an equal share in the camp and if
not, it would go to Sean who still lives full time on the land. Although Ryan
was cleared when the tragedy happened and he denies being the culprit,
his sisters are torn about what to do. It seems that they need to find out
who actually committed the crime before they can make a decision. But
how are they going to unravel the mystery of what happened twenty years
before?
Any one of them could have committed the crime and each one of them
seems to have a little bit of information that could bring this story to a
close. But there’s more to it than just solving the mystery. Ryan, who’s in
financial trouble, desperately needs to sell the land, Margaux and Mary
really don’t care one way or the other, the twins have opposing views and
Sean just wants to still have a home when it’s all decided. Will they be able
to work together to solve the mystery or will the whole family be torn apart?
When I first starting reading this book, I thought it was going to be a
very run-of-the-mill murder mystery. A crime was committed long ago and
we needed to find out whodunit out of 7 or 8 seemingly guilty suspects.
But, the more I read, the more involved I became in the story. I needed to
find out whodunit, but I also wanted to find out what happened to all of the
characters in the book. All of the characters were very likable and I wanted
them all to have a happy ending, but that didn’t seem possible. Someone
committed the crime and someone would have to pay, even though they
just wanted to forget the whole mess and go on with their lives.
I give this book 3 roses. It wasn’t the best mystery I’ve read but it wasn’t
bad. It had some surprises and it certainly held my attention and I definitely
recommend it.
Until next time, pray for cool weather and read a book. If it’s a good
read, pass it on!
Tybee got really lucky with Dorian! Unfortunately, not all of our dear friends
in the Bahamas were as lucky. Read on…
From the Crab Shack: Here’s the scoop… kind of ‘cart before the
horse’
“We want to do something for our personal friends. They are like
family. For Barabbas and The Junkanoo Tribe who’ve been coming
to Tybee/Savannah for so many years and entertaining during the
St. Pats festivities.” (That was announced on TV BEFORE we had
everything in place.)
We have to arrange for drop points, sorting, packing, and transport
TO the Bahamas so that it reaches the hands of OUR friends. As soon
as that’s done, it will be announced on our Website and The Original
Crab Shack Facebook page, as well as Instagram, Twitter and on
WSAV again.
