stereotypical boundaries often associated with the
generational label. “It’s really easy to see the negatives of
other groups. We’re here from the choices we’ve all made
together. We all have a hand in that,” says Emily. “Millennials
have a tough financial situation. They’ve inherited
a lot of debt. The fact that school costs over 100%
more than it did in the 80s and 90s makes it really
difficult because we’ve been brought up to know that
you go to college and then you get a good job. That’s
the line we were sold when we were young. So people

took on massive loans to go to college, and there are no
jobs. There’s no one hiring them or wanting a master’s
degree to pay you $11 an hour. It’s a unique situation
that no other generation has experienced,” Emily says.
Blaming millennials for ‘killing’ industry is likely an unfair
statement in and of itself. “We’re just trying to live our
lives and pay our bills like everyone else. But, somehow
we’ve become the generation that has ruined everything
for everyone,” she says.
Emily is a perfect example of dedication leading to
success. She believes that when it comes down to it,
you just have to put in the work. “Especially for women,
you have to raise your hand,” Emily says. “Women are
told to be pretty and to be nice. They’re not really told
to be brave. We’re not raising courageous women.” In
our area in particular, she believes that there is also a
prosperity scarcity issue in which people view others’
success and interpret that to mean that now there is
less room for their own personal success. “It’s a mindset
problem,” Emily says. “My success doesn’t mean
there is less success for you. It’s not pie.”
So, what’s next for this local standout? We’re crossing
our fingers for public office! “Where am I going to be
in 10 years? I don’t really know,” says Emily. “But, I know
it will be on another level. I don’t plan on staying where
I am. I’m on a trajectory, and I’m sure that will include
some kids and other natural life events. But, working
and serving at a higher level is what I’m looking for.”
