quick to change his perception. “I was kind of leery at first.
When I walked through the door and those women jumped
on me, I said, “Well, I guess I’m stuck,”” Mike laughs. “You come
through here, and they give you back life.” For Dr. Gillespie,
Mike’s case was fairly straightforward, and he was confident
he could complete his dental work within about a month’s
time. “So many people will suffer through this type of thing,
and they have in their mind that it’s going to be some huge,
complicated treatment plan. Sometimes you can quickly get
people to a minimal, functional level…what we call “bread and
butter” dental work. And that’s what we were able to do for
Mike,” says Dr. Gillespie. Now, Mike has let his guard down. He
doesn’t hold back his smile anymore. “I show everybody. They
feel great too,” he says of his new teeth. Mike is looking forward
to an upcoming surgery that will complete his smile makeover.
“I already feel better about myself, and I’ll be totally different
this time next year,” he says. Dr. Gillespie adds, “From the first
time meeting him to now, his confidence has increased. He
looks 15, 20 years younger. It is a great thing to be able to feel
confident. You can be yourself. You don’t have to be somebody
less.”
Dr. Gillespie looks forward to continuing Project Smile. “We
had such a good experience. The connection that we made
with these people, with the folks that nominated them, with
our community, it has been very meaningful for us as a dental
practice. I think it’s meant a lot to the people that have received
the treatment. I think we all feel good. We just all feel good
about what we’ve done,” says Dr. Gillespie. Giving back and
supporting the community has always been a priority for Dr.
Gillespie. “That’s part of what I want my legacy to be, aside
from being a dentist. When I do eventually retire and ol’’ Doc
Gillespie’s not up here anymore…when people think of me, I
want a smile to come across their face. I want them to go into
a big grin, because they remember something that I did for the
community or something I did for them personally,” he says. Dr.
Gillespie is definitely working towards cementing that legacy. To
think of Dr. Gillespie and smile, well Mike says, “It’s easy to do.”
