Around Town
with Benjamin Sykes
Center of Town Rock
Isn’t this the coolest rock ever?!?! I just
love visiting this rock commemorating
the center of the Village of Pinehurst. For
starters, I love rocks; I love villages, and I
love history, so this place is super special!
And there is no better time to visit this
place than during the Village’s 125th
birthday anniversary year. When James
Walker Tufts drove a stake in the ground
to mark the center of his new Village in
1895, do you think he could have ever
imagined the Village of Pinehurst today?
Situated between Given Memorial Library
and James W. Tufts Memorial Park on Village
Green Rd, the center of town rests. If you want
to see what the Village looked like 125 years
ago, then walk down to the Tufts Archives
and check out the historic photos. Then walk
around the Village of Pinehurst today and let
me know what changes you see around town.
And... when you look to the left of the rock,
check out the cool American Holly tree. I think
it looks like it has faces and eyeballs all over
the bark. It's pretty cool and always brings a
smile. Have fun exploring the Village! ☐
The Vass Memorial Garden
Situated on Main Street in Vass, the Vass
Memorial Garden is located just across
the street from the Vass Rescue Squad.
Different from most “parks” we feature, the
Memorial Garden is a little gem in Vass.
Probably taken for granted and driven
past daily without much thought from
others, the Garden invites all to take the
time to stop and enjoy the memories.
As the sign tells, this special place offers
a memorial, a chance for locals to honor
their loved ones who have passed on by
securing their name on a garden brick to
greet generations to come. If you would
like to honor a loved one by purchasing
a brick, then call the Town Administrator for
assistance.
Matthew and Wesley had fun exploring the
shaded garden, reading the family names,
making shadow characters and enjoying
some fresh air in the sunshine. Matthew even
found his name carved into a tree!
Check out this park to grow your local
awareness of something out of the ordinary.☐
