A Visit with Wally
Getting to know Wally, aka Brian Lally.
A golf pro, concierge, local resident and best
of all friend to all, Wally shares a visit.
What is your favorite golf course?
Pinehurst No. 2. It’s so good you can’t overlook
it! It’s beautiful, challenging and gets better
with age. It’s probably the greatest walk in golf
that I’ve ever experienced because you have
to walk it. And that’s when you really feel it.
It’s an unbelievable piece of land! It could rain
4 inches today, and by tomorrow you could
walk on No. 2 and not get wet. The drainage
out there is sent from Heaven.
I’m a golf and architectural nerd, so stuff
like that really appeals to me. Courses like
No. 2 helped me make a great living in taking
care of the guests who stay in Pinehurst. Golf
is such a big draw which in turn builds our
beautiful community.
Favorite golfer and why? Arnold Palmer.
He put golf on the map. When he was playing,
golf was just getting on TV, and Palmer was
a gentleman, a champion and a charismatic
personality who was so good with people.
Palmer was a huge fan of Pinehurst! You’d see
him at the Pine Crest Inn, and he would sign
autographs until his hand got tired.
Favorite restaurant? Lisi’s, the Italian
restaurant in the Village. Everything is
homemade using nothing but the finest
ingredients available; the raviolis are great!
How would you summarize life? Life
is? A gift. You only get one life. I am just so
grateful! I live every single day in gratitude,
because somebody has it worse, for sure. I
think life becomes a little easier as you get
older because we are less worried about what
others think about us. We have a choice of
whether or not we will have a good day.
Advice for young people? Don’t sweat
the small stuff. In my early days, I was a worrier,
Getting to know
Mr. Loeser & Mr. Puckett
Meet Mr. Bill Loeser, Pres., & Mr. David
Puckett, VP, Moore County Shrine Club.
Puckett & Loeser of Moore Co Shriners.
Favorites of Moore?
Loeser: My wife and I enjoy playing
golf, and we have fun playing pickle ball at
the Pinehurst Recreation Building, the new
facility on Rattlesnake Trail.
As for golf, I belong to a group of twelve
Christian guys who play golf twice a week.
We stand in a circle and pray for the requests
shared at each gathering. That’s one of my
favorite things to do.
Puckett: My wife Edie and I enjoy walking
our dogs at the Reservoir Park in Southern
Pines as well as kayaking there. We used to
enjoy attending Alive After 5 in the Village
of Pinehurst with friends and hope to again
when they are able to start that back up.
How would you summarize life? Life is?
Loeser: Too short. Life is just love, and
we need to care about our fellow man. As
both a Mason and a Shriner, I want to make
a difference. And that goes back to our
Founding Fathers. Most of the men who
signed the Declaration of Independence
were Masons such as George Washington,
Benjamin Franklin and James Monroe.
Puckett: Life is all about love and
kindness. Without it, we would be fearful to
walk out our front doors.
What advice would you give young men?
Loeser: I want to encourage young men,
support their interests and give them moral
support—to be there for them. If they want to
talk, then we need to listen.
Puckett: In providing encouragement,
guidance, a firm voice to listen, I want to let
them know that it’s OK to wipe off the mistakes
and keep going. Mistakes happen, and our
lives are not defined by small mistakes. I
would offer an encouraging word and be a
listening ear. ☐ For more info, see article

but I’ve learned to enjoy every moment. I’m a
list maker, and I love to cross stuff off my list.
In summarizing the gift, Pinehurst is?
