Allah will increase their sustenance for
the rest of that year” (Shu’ab al-Iman).
The aforementioned hadith has been
narrated by numerous other companions
Jabir bin Abdullah, Abdullah
bin Masud and Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri
l. Furthermore, this hadith has been
deemed reliable by Imam Bayhaqi r,
Hafiz ‘Iraqi r, ‘Allamah Suyuti r and
others.
Increasing one’s expenditure can refer
to spending extra on the iftar for the
fast on that day, as some ‘ulama have
mentioned. Other ‘ulama are of the
opinion that the hadith is not restricted
to food. Rather, the virtue would be
attained by one increasing their spending
on their family/dependents in any
form.
Question: I am aware that it is extremely
virtuous to fast on the 10th of Muharram.
However, I heard that a person
cannot only fast on the 10th and that
they must fast either the day before or
the day after also. Is this true? Would I
be sinful for fasting only on the 10th?
Answer: It is mustahab (desirable) to
fast either the day before or the day
after the 10th of Muharram along with
fasting on the 10th. However, fasting
only on the 10th is permissible and one
would not be sinful for doing so.
Question: Is it sunnah to apply kuhl
(antimony) in one’s eyes on the 10th of
Muharram?
Answer: It is not Sunna to apply kuhl
on the 10th of Muharram. Rather, many
‘ulama have written that such a practice
was first introduced by deviant sects
and should thus be avoided.
Question: A person is in the habit of
performing salat in a way that his
lips do not move at all while reciting
Qur’an. Will his salat be valid?
Answer: In principle, it is necessary for
one to verbally recite Qur’an in a manner
that the letters are actually pronounced.
Mere recitation from one’s
heart would not be sufficient. Thus,
if one were to recite Qur’an in such a
manner in salat (without moving their
tongue or lips), their salat would not be
valid since recitation of Qur’an is compulsory
and such recitation is invalid.
Question: If a child passes away a few
days after birth, would it still be Sunna
to perform an aqeeqa?
Answer: In such a scenario, it would
not be Sunna for an aqeeqa to be performed.
Question: There is a couple who has
sons, but no daughter and they really
want a daughter. Since they were not
successful in having a daughter, they
wish to adopt a baby girl now. The
wife is not lactating currently and does
not have any breast milk stored in the
freezer from her last baby. Given this
situation, they were thinking of giving
the wife medicine to help induce lactation.
From a hijab perspective, if the
wife is successful in feeding the baby,
will the baby girl have to do hijab from
the foster father/foster brothers in the
future?
Answer: In the aforementioned scenario,
the daughter would be considered a
mahram to both the foster-father as
well as the foster-siblings and would
not be required to do hijab in front of
them. However, it should be noted that
in the case of the father, the ruling of
being a mahram would be restricted
to him alone. This ruling would not be
extended to his father or siblings and
the adopted daughter would still be
required to observe hijab in front of
them. Whereas in the case of the foster
mother, her father and male siblings
would also be a mahram for the child.
