in the toes and soles of his shoes to a teacher on
our team. Coincidentally, yet totally intentional
by God, she was supposed to be on a prior mission
trip. She gave him a pair of used little girl’s Nikes.
When she cleaned his feet with several wipes that
never got his feet cleaned and put the “new” shoes
on him, you would have thought she gave him the
world. One little boy, with a make-shift kite made
from dirty strips from a plastic bag and sticks,
was running without shoes, his kite dragging on
the ground but for the little breeze that made
his kite airborne for a split second. To relinquish
our relentless desire to do “something”, our team
bought hundreds of dollars-worth of shoes at
the local mall. Bob told us not to be discouraged
because there is never enough to meet the need.
He said, “Like Private Doss in the movie Hacksaw
Ridge, I pray that God helps me get one more.”
The same children in the same clothes from days
prior could be found at the community laundry
pool, or at Campos De Sueños, a church founded
by a former U.S. Marine. Most of the parents cannot
afford the $160 annually required for school
supplies and uniforms and the children receive
no education. Through Campos De Sueños, God
has assured hundreds of children will have at
least two nutritious meals per week. Older children
carried younger siblings strapped to their
backs to ensure they were fed both physically and
spiritually. As only God can do, the arts and craft
project was the logo of Servants Hearts Ministries
(two hands surrounding one heart). However, the
craft was planned long before we knew about
Servants Hearts Ministries. We were originally
scheduled to serve in Nicaragua but due to the
unrest went to Guatemala at the last moment.
I came back home with less of my things and less
of a desire to accumulate more. I went to Guatemala
to help those in need, but I did not expect
that I would be the one that needed the help. I
not only found God in Guatemala, I found a new
purpose and a way to serve God.
