Six ways to Welcome the New Year with
Renewed Intention, Purpose, and Passion
By Marisa Rivera
Every year, millions of people make “New Year’s Resolutions”.
But this year is different. We just ended 2020, an epic year
for all of us. We experienced many crises, a total global
shutdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic, economic distress,
social unrest, a stressful Presidential election, and an assault
to the U.S. Capitol. 2020
¡Las Jefas!
brought to the forefront how
precious and fragile life is. After
all we have been through,
we must reflect on what is
next and how to survive after
such a tumultuous year or better
yet, thrive?
We must start the new year
with renewed Purpose, Intention,
and Passion for life. How do we
shift our attitude, our energies,
and our outlook towards the
new year? How do we heal after
going through such a daunting
year? I believe that in every
crisis there is an opportunity.
Remember that you are the
author of your own life story, the
captain of your own ship and the
CEO of your life and your home.
Do not wait for later. Live in the
NOW. Living with Intention and
purpose helps you align with
what you most desire out of life
from the inside out. It inspires how you approach situations and decisions. Your
intentions are about WHY you’re doing whatever you are doing.
Here are some steps to help you set a positive attitude towards the new
year intentions:
Living in the now: We only have today, make each day count, and live it like
it was your last. When I was younger, my parents complained about how many
activities I was involved in and I used to tell them: “Hay que Vivir la Vida
intensamente”- We have to live life intensely. In my 60’s, I still say and live by that.
After 2020, that desire has become even stronger.
Visualize your intention - As the CEO of your life, you must be
visionary. Imagine the life you
want, visualize what it might
look and feel like. Feel it, taste it,
listen to it. If you can visualize
your purpose, your passion in
life, you can create it.
Practice affirmations to
strengthen that intention.
Affirmations are clear positive
statements in the present tense
that encapsulate what you want
to make a reality. Practice
positive affirmations to increase
positive energy and bring
positive thoughts into your life.
Write them now, repeat them.
Breathe: We tend to take
breathing for granted. Oxygen is
our first food and our last before
we pass away. We need oxygen
to live. Learning how to breathe
correctly and rhythmically can
help you relax, calm down when
in distress and focus when you
need to pay attention.
Follow your Passion: There is a big difference between doing a job and being
passionate about your job. Passion is an emotion that comes from within you. It
is your attitude, your enthusiasm, your drive and your motivation to do an
excellent job. Live with your passion!
Be a servant leader: Give back, volunteer. America has a lot of needs and
we can all help. Helping during food drives, or sewing masks for first responders
or the homeless, picking up trash along the ocean, donating to causes that
inspire you, there are many ways to use your skills to help others!
Creating the life you want requires commitment, time, and responsibility. It
requires you to remember that you are the author of your own life story and that
every day it goes by, you are writing a new chapter in that book. Change your
attitude and enter the year 2021 with renewed sense of purpose, intention, and
passion! Happy New Year and Happy New YOU!
