furnishings are still intact. The house played an important part in Florida
history as the Emancipation Proclamation was announced there in 1865.
Tallahassee is a city full of pleasant surprises, including the only private
residence in the state of Florida that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.
Known as the Spring House, the property has a natural spring that flows
to Lake Jackson. The unique house, which was completed in 1954, has
an unconventional passive solar “hemicycle” design. Wright died in
1959 without ever seeing the completed home that he had designed
for George Lewis and his wife, Clifton, after they asked him to do so.
We also visited the LeMoyne Center for the Visual Arts. This teaching
and exhibition space gave us a chance to learn how to create sumi-e art
using ink and brushes through the inspired direction of the center’s
art director Ann Kozeliski, an expert in this form of East Asian brush
painting. The center is named for Jacques LeMoyne, the French artist
who visited northern Florida with Jean Ribault in the early 1500s. The
center also holds events and curates exhibits throughout the year.
Since we travel to Tallahassee often for a variety of reasons, we used
our time on this visit to search out some things we had never done before,
which for us usually involves food. We enjoyed traditional Italian cuisine
at Bella Bella, a longtime popular place to dine in Tallahassee. Likewise, we
loved the creative cooking at Kool Beanz, and we overindulged in some
luxurious desserts. We also found Food Glorious Food, which further
convinced us that dining in this city has become an art form. However,
the most intriguing spot was Backwoods Crossing, where much of what
we ate was harvested from the gardens that surround the restaurant.
