READY MIX DIVISION
Five of the division’s mixer drivers competed
this year in the National Ready
Mixed Concrete Association’s (NRMCA)
Mixer Driver Championship, squaring off
against each other and 89 other expert
NRMCA producer member drivers from
across the country. Company drivers
Alberto Pacheco, Armando Acosta,
Joe Wallace, John Pesina Jr. and Leo
Stewart (pictured above from left) each
took a two-hour written exam, drove
their mixers through a challenge course,
performed a visual vehicle inspection
and endured a reaction-time test during
the early October competition. Ready
Mix Supervisor Bill Coburn said he
was proud of their overall effort. “They
all performed exceptionally well and
represented Martin Marietta with great
professionalism,” he said. “I know they
look forward to the possibility of competing
again in the future.”

In an Emergency,
Seconds Count
For the second year in a row, the
team at Spec Agg Quarry in Golden,
Colorado, hosted the Golden Fire
Department for a series of mock rescue
drills. The drills, which took place
over a two-day period, allowed the first
responders to gain familiarity with the
quarry and its equipment and provided
them with the chance to experience
multiple rescue scenarios in a general
industrialized setting. The drills also
allowed the quarry team to practice
its response to emergency situations,
said Luke Riemenschneider, the site’s
assistant plant manager. “This type of
training is extremely valuable for both
first responders and the Spec Agg crew
as they train to achieve the quickest response
time possible,” he said. “When
a person’s life is at risk, seconds
count. Any saved time is priceless.”
▼ MIDEAST DIVISION
Darryl “Tooter” Gheen, a lab technician
based out of Phillipsburg Quarry, has
retired from Martin
Marietta after more
than 41 years of safe
work with the company.
Hired in March 1976,
Gheen began his career
as a plant maintenance
person and a loader operator,
said Ohio District HR and Safety
Manager Jenifer Lehman. He spent
time as a truck driver and truck driver
supervisor in 1994 before entering into
a role as recycle sales representative.
In 1997, Gheen became a foreman
at an area sand and gravel dredge
operation. He remained in that position
until 2003 when he entered into the
field of quality control. “Darryl has been
a valuable asset to our team,” Lehman
said. “He will be truly missed by all
of us here, but we hope he enjoys his
retirement.”
Ohio District Electrical Manager John
Frank is currently celebrating his 40th
year of service with Martin Marietta.
Originally hired as a plant maintenance
man in August 1977, Frank spent more
than a decade operating heavy equipment
until becoming an hourly electrician
in 1989. Frank, who first gained
management experience by accepting
an electrical supervisor position in
1997, currently serves on the Ohio
District’s Decision-based Safety Team
and the Mideast Division’s Safety Audit
Benchmarking Team. He has responsibilities
at operations in Ohio, northern
Kentucky and West Virginia. “I’ve been
fortunate,” Frank said recently. “I’m
employed with a great company and
have worked with outstanding people
over the years.”
