Onaway Courthouse Building is living history, and displays it too
The city of Onaway’s jewel
in the center of town for the
last 110 years stands the test of
time.
The historic three-level
Onaway Courthouse Building
at the Washington Avenue and
State Street curve was designated
as a Michigan State Historic
Site 40 years ago and was
listed on the National Register
of Historic places in 1980.
There is a lot of work
that has gone into its up keep
the last two decades, that not
only saved it from the wrecking
ball, but it has turned into
a landmark city residents are
proud of.
It is the home of Onaway’s
city government, the Onaway
Community Chamber of Commerce
and Presque Isle District
Library, Onaway branch.
steps take visitors back to a
time gone by in a community,
whose lifeblood was
the lumbering industry.
The Onaway Historical
Society has displays
from its founding in the
latter 1800s to the present
located in the former
courtroom.
Follow the history
of Onaway through its
founding to almost being
a county seat, to a factory
boomtown based on the
lumber industry, through

ly into a northern Michigan
tourist destination.

items depicting Onaway
at the turn of the 20th
century, including a turn of
the century school room, doc-

steering wheels from the
American Rim Company aka,
Lobdell-Emery Wooden Steering
Wheel Factory.
Also come in and view
the contents of the 1908 Historic
Courthouse Cornerstone
Time Capsule opened Fourth
of July, 2008 on the centennial
anniversary.
With another decade of
serving the community in the
110th anniversary of its opening,
it remains the heart of the
town.
