worry about, but Brian as well. I’ll take first watch. You guys try to
get some rest. We should head out at first light.”
“Who can rest?” Becky says. “Those things can get over here.
Brian could come back at any time and he’s a sneaky one. And we
have two friends to bury...”
There is a moment of silence as Becky’s words hit them and the
adrenaline of the last few minutes dissipates. It’s broken when Tony
exclaims, “Shit! Maybe we should have taken care of Brian when
we had the chance.”
“Do you hear yourself, man?” Rudy asks quietly, concerned.
“What the hell, Tony?” Becky says, barely keeping her cool. “You
can’t just go around shooting people you don’t like, all willy-nilly.”
“Do you hear that?” Tony cocks his head to the sky.
“What?” Nate asks. “Is it those things?”
“No. Listen. It sounds like a few F-16’s.”
As the jets get closer, the roar of their engines gain momentum in
the groups’ ears.
“How the hell do you know that?” Rudy asks.
“Ten years in the army and four years in the Middle East,” replies
Tony.
The F-16’s scream overhead and head west.
“Maybe the military is getting their shit together and this whole
thing will be over soon,” Nate muses, and just as the thought
passes his lips the sky to the west lights up with bright flashes. The
sound follows just a moment behind.
“Holy hell,” Tony says quietly. “They’re bombing Savannah.”
