WE ALSO RIDE OFF THE ISLAND!
By Dank Aaron
Last month I mentioned doing psilocybin mushrooms at an Atlanta
Braves game once back in the 80’s (and again, I highly recommend it).
That being said, I have nothing on former major league pitcher, Dock
Ellis, who threw a complete game, no-hitter, in 1970 for the Pittsburgh
Pirates while doing LSD!! Mind you, he walked eight batters and hit one,
but no one could get a hit off of him.
The story, according to Dock: Pittsburgh was starting a series in San
Diego on June 12th. They flew out there June 11th. When they landed,
Dock ate a hit of LSD, and since he wasn’t scheduled to pitch and the
series didn’t start until the next day, he decided to go to Los Angeles
to visit a friend. So, they were in L.A. partying and partaking, when at
some point Dock fell asleep. When he woke up, he thought it was still
the same day, so he took another hit of LSD. About an hour later, Dock’s
friend was looking through the newspaper and and realized that Dock
was scheduled to pitch THAT DAY and in under five hours!!! They rushed
his tripping ass to the airport and he arrived in San Diego 90 minutes
before the first pitch. “I started having a crazy idea in the fourth inning
that Richard Nixon was the home plate umpire, and once I thought I was
pitching a baseball to Jimi Hendrix, who to me, was holding a guitar and
swinging it over the plate.” And the rest, as they say, is history. How’s
that for some performance enhancing drugs! Dock also said of the same
game, “I remember diving out of the way of a ball I thought was a line
drive. I jumped, but the ball wasn’t hit hard and never reached me.”
Check out Todd Sniders song, America’s Favorite Pastime, about Dock.
Good stuff!!
Moving along … Tybee Island Dart League is 10 years old this year!! I
know last season felt like 10 years but … anyway, new season starts this
month. If you would like to be on a team or start a team, there will be a
Captain’s Meeting Monday, August 6th at 8pm at The Quarter Bar. Come
on and check it out.
WOW!!! It’s August and the Braves are still in the hunt for a playoff spot!!
Playoffs??? GO BRAVES!!!
