Pete Hendry

Tybee lost a great man and a good friend to many recently, with the passing of
Pete Hendry. I first met Pete in his later years, shortly after he bought a condo on
the South End and moved permanently to the island almost a decade ago. Pete
had a routine that kept him pretty much south of 14th St. except when he went
to the post office, American Legion, the lighthouse and Publix on Whitemarsh
for his BOGOs for his beloved frozen dinners. He quickly established a walking
route to the Rip Tide Bar at the pier, then to Doc’s Bar and occasionally Nickie’s
and Stingray’s. But 14th St. was pretty much as far north as he would travel.
I can’t remember if I first met him at the pier or at Doc’s, but we quickly
became friends as sports and happy hour were shared interests! Pete would
always welcome me by his place for a drink and then off to the pier and/or
Doc’s we’d go. He would always have just one more at last call for happy hour
prices and then saunter home for his supper and maybe a nightcap.
We were regulars for Turkey Tuesday at the Wind Rose Cafe (extra cranberry
of course, right Alaina?) and had more than a few kid’s shrimp dinners at
Stingray’s. Pete introduced me to Screw your Neighbor at the Legion and had
a strict rule of driving: just one drink or 2 games and then quickly back down
front.
Pete always wore a smile on his face and had many friends that got to know
and love him. From the regulars at the pier to the Wheel of Fortune happy hour
crowd at Doc’s, Pete became quite a fixture on the South End and would raise
eyebrows and concern if he wasn’t in attendance at happy hour festivities.
Although Pete’s health failed him this summer, he will be remembered and
loved my many Tybee friends who got to know him quite well.
I miss you already Pete and I know there are many that echo that same
sentiment. Turkey Tuesdays will never be the same.
