TYBEE BEACHCOMBER | OCT 2018 41
Main Street Musings
Chantel Morton, Program Staff Director
Ah, October on Tybee! As the temp cools and a semblance of “Back to Normal”
returns, the nostalgic feeling of island living returns. Fall is in the air and getting
around is easier. This time of year is marked by spending more time outdoors
with neighbors as fall plans are made, gardens are prepped with fall colors, biking
around the island to an appointment, for groceries, and/or experiencing art at the
Post and Arts Center and local galleries. Plus, relaxing at one of Tybee’s parks
brings a renewed sense of calm.
Tybee Community Day is back on October 14! This annual celebration provides
you an opportunity to learn about local non-profit organizations and businesses,
dance to live music, enjoy grilled hot dogs, play a few games, get your face painted
and more at Memorial Park. After a hectic summer season, it’s a great way to get
back to “Tybee time,” re-connect with your island friends, and maybe make some
new ones, too!
Plus, this year, we’re going to celebrate Tybee’s 131st birthday one day early too!
AJ and his crew have been recruited to surprise everyone with the cake this year!
Plan to partake in the 6th Annual Tybee Community Day Celebration starting at
1 pm in Memorial Park. This island-wide event celebrates the tradition of “Return
to Normal” for residents and merchants. It’s your day to relax, take a breather, and
enjoy true “Tybee Time” as we gather for a fabulous day of community spirit with
a backyard picnic setting for the town! With all of the games, live music, food, and
local info and demos, Community Day is the day for all ages of Tybeeians to play!

Just like our tagline says – the City is committed to preserving community,
commerce and culture year-round. Aspects that distinguish Tybee from any other
town are important and a lot is covered with these four words and one ampersand!
1) Preserving…
The City of Tybee Island is Georgia’s 88th Certified Local Government and continues
to work with dedicated volunteers to ensure that preserving Tybee’s authenticity by
design is maintained.
2) Community…
This word encompasses the people, activities, and organizations that make a
difference through the works by their volunteers!
3) Commerce…
There are over 120 locations for you to stop in for shopping, dining, personal
services, and recreational needs on the island. 99% of these are unique to Tybee
and help maintain the authenticity of small town living. It’s wonderful having the
convenience of businesses that citizens need year-round.
4) Culture…
Culture here refers to heritage and arts that compliment community and history.
From the Tybee Light Station to the Marine Science Center to the Arts Center to
the Post Theater, people are exposed to the assortment of culture, art and history
within approx. 5.2 sq. miles. Preserving these aspects that distinguish Tybee from
any other town is important.
