MODERNIZING
Mediterranean
WHILE THE TUSCAN STYLE reigned supreme in Naples, tastes
have changed and the prominent Italian influences have been replaced
by a light, transitional design theme. Dark wood, niches, heavy fabrics,
columns, arches, compartmentalized layouts, and oversized furniture
are all signature features of the Tuscan influence. Now people want
coastal tones, softer fabrics, and homes that are open, matching the
less formal way life is lived in Naples. While many local homes have
been transformed, it’s still common to come across a residence with the
original Mediterranean style still intact. At Genuine Home Builders,
we are experts in de-Tuscanizing both the interior and exterior of any
home, so if you feel the location is right, don’t let a dated appearance
keep you from purchasing your Naples retreat. Some simple fixes will
go a long way in modernizing a Mediterranean home.
On the outside, paint and the removal of the precast columns will
totally change the look of the facade. False balconies, multiple columns,
and arches trimmed with precast stone can be removed altogether or
replaced with simpler, linear columns for an instant update. The gold
and terra-cotta colors found on many exteriors can be swapped out
for a softer hue. We also recommend squaring off arches both inside
and out. It’s a relatively easy fix and goes a long way when it comes to
creating a more modern residence.
The layout inside these Mediterranean homes is often closed in and
choppy. Formal living and dining spaces were usually placed right off
the home’s foyer and feature extremely tall ceilings, heavy drapes, niches
surrounding a fireplace, and dining rooms with dramatic wood tables
and chairs. For most people, these large formal spaces don’t match their
lifestyle any longer. Removing walls, opening rooms, and sometimes even
lowering ceilings to create a more human scale are key to modernizing
these homes. Of course, a contractor should be consulted—some of these
walls will be load bearing and either can’t be removed or will need to be
replaced by other support systems.
Inside, paint and arches again make a huge difference. Faux
finishing was all the rage in these Mediterranean homes but it is the
first thing to remove. Choosing a solid color or adding wallpaper with
modern colors and textures instantly updates the space. Squaring off
