4 Rules for a Successful
& Relaxing Pool Season
by Jessica Tessman
Rule 1: Start early.
The ideal time to open your pool is late March
through early May. Algae likes warm water. If you
wait until Memorial Day or later to pull the cover
back, chances are that you will have to contend
with algae. If you start when the water is cold,
then any algae can be taken care of quickly and
easily—saving you money!
Rule 2: Use the right products.
Make it a priority to only use chemicals
manufactured in the United States. Chlorine
and shock manufactured overseas are not held
to the same standards as those manufactured
in the United States. They are watered-down
and full of fillers, gums, and binders. Cheap salt
contains impurities that negatively impact salt
cell performance and dramatically shorten the
life of the cell. Professional level chemicals will
cost you more up front, but they make a world
of difference in performance and in your pool
experience.
Rule 3: Keep the pump running.
All pools need a minimum of 8 hours of
circulation per day to ensure adequate filtration
and sanitizer distribution. During the hottest
parts of the summer, pools need at least 12
hours of circulation during the daylight hours.
Pool professionals recommend 24 hour, nonstop
circulation.
Rule 4: Seek professional help.
Many pool (and spa!) owners see pool stores
as a last resort. Time and again, frustrated
pool owners come to me after they’ve “tried
everything” and spent hundreds of dollars.
Southern Tropics has a professional level water
lab, quality chemicals, and most importantly,
years of experience in the industry.
Does your pool look like a swamp? We can
fix that. Is your water purple? We know why! Are
your eyes burning under water? The pool is out
of balance!
