Rose Cottage
Just as lovely as a rose, the Rose Cottage was
established in 1895, in the heart of the Village of
Pinehurst on Magnolia Road. Built by Mr. James Tufts,
the cottage cost $1,050 to build and $185 to rent for
the season. As the Village grew, the Rose Cottage
hosted many guests eager to enjoy Pinehurst.
In June of 1906, the Cottage was sold to the
George Blake family, then to the Chatfield family in
February of 1929, followed by the Razook family in
May of 1940. Features of the story and a half cottage
include wooden shingles, dormers, and the prettiest
sun room in town. As you walk in the Village, enjoy
the beautiful Rose Cottage of 1895. ☐
Cardinal & Blue Jay Friends
Springtime in the Sandhills—ahhh! Sunny days,
beautiful blossoms, and song birds abound. Enjoy
these gorgeous days and create some songbirds to
bring inside. Let’s get started.
Materials:
2 toilet paper roll tubes • Red, blue, black,
orange and white acrylic paint • Paint brushes •
Permanent marker • Cup of water for brushes.
Instructions:
• Paint one paper roll red.
• Paint the other one blue.
• Let the painted rolls dry as you plan your design.
• Now let’s get started making the birds.
• Fold one half of the top of the tube in.
• Fold the other half in to create two overlapping
sections making the crest of the birds.
For the Cardinal: paint an orange diamond for
his beak on the front of the tube (where the crest
forms). Paint the face black around the beak.
For the Blue Jay: paint a black diamond for his
beak on the front of the tube (where the crest
forms.) Paint the face white around the beak.
To define the beak, using the permanent
marker draw a line through the center of the
diamond shape. Dip the pointed end of a small
paintbrush and paint
two dots for the eyes just
above the beak. White
eyes for the Cardinal.
Black eyes for the Blue Jay.
Enjoy your little birdies
and smile! ☐
