ENJOY A POUR OVER continued
Enjoy a Pour Over
at High Octane
by Kelly Ward
The Downtown Aberdeen “neighborhood”
coffee house High Octane has added perky
new coffee services to its small but full of
personality menu. One of the additions is the
Pour Over coffee experience, yes, experience as
this method of brewing is visually stimulating
and takes five to seven minutes from start to
steaming cup.
If unfamiliar with pour over methods and
wondering the difference between a pour over
cuppa versus a drip coffee cuppa, think art
versus science. The main difference between
the two methods is the coffee quality as the
pour over method ensures temperature stability,
pouring style and consistency, and the ability to
“dial in” (baristas make adjustments whereas
drip machines have few mechanical adjustment
options). The Pour Over coffee method began in
the early 1900s when a woman, named Amalie
Auguste Melitta Benz was unsatisfied with
her “percolator” coffee. Pour Coffee brewing
requires the following: appropriate grind size
and dose of coffee, a paper filter, the dripper,
goose neck kettle, a carafe and a few minutes to
brew. Pour over brewing can be easily integrated
into your home brewing experience. Drop in, try
it and discuss with one of the baristas how to
perk up your morning coffee.
The other addition to the menu is Nitro
Cold Brew Coffee, commonly called NCB. The
High Octane cold brew coffee has been pouring

for several months but now can be enjoyed on
“tap.” NCB is charged with nitrogen to give it
a rich, creamy head, similar to nitro draft beer
like Guinness. If you want a smooth, less acidic,
slightly more caffeinated option, visit High
Octane and request a sample, but if you are a
coffee fan, you will quickly request the half or
full-tank option.
High Octane is open Monday through
Saturday at 7:00 am through the week and
8:00 am on Saturday. Check out our Facebook,
Instagram and website for upcoming events and
new menu items. ☐
