having symptoms of prostate
cancer?
Kevin Schlehuber: I would
have never known because
I had no symptoms. That's why
it takes being educated on cancer
awareness to know. When
you reach the age of 40, you
should go get checked… that's
why I'm speaking now at the
age of 58, raising awareness
and educating men.
iPL: What was the time frame
from diagnosis to final treatment?
KS: My PSA (measured during
a routine blood test) was
high. I had a biopsy and I came
back positive for prostate cancer.
This was about three
weeks before Thanksgiving
2018, and I had to wait until
after Thanksgiving for surgery.
iPL: What approach did you
take for treatment? Surgery,
chemo, radiation?
KS: I lost my brother to a
chemotherapy agent called actinomycin.
My other brother is
having chemo right now and
I preferred to just get it out
(surgery). What happens is,
they take out the entire prostate.

iPL: Did doctors believe they
removed it all, or is there a
chance for return?
KS: It might be 5 years before
you can call yourself cancerfree.
And, the recovery process
is much more difficult than I
anticipated. I put up a post saying
that I'm cancer-free because
surgeons removed the
whole prostate. But I still will
be going back to the doctor
every three months for checkups.
I'm on medications now as
well. It's not like I have cancer
one week and now I'm good.
People think, 'hey, I'm cancer-
