Where’s My Seat
Overview: This task will allow students the opportunity to use algebra and
patterns to solve a seating problem in the lunchroom.
Our class has 26 students. Mrs. Hamilton’s class has 28 students. In science,
our class is studying the Digestive System, while Mrs. Hamilton’s class is
studying Nutrition. Our class has been invited to join Mrs. Hamilton’s class
for a cooking activity in the lunchroom. The tables need to be arranged so
that all the tables are touching and there are no empty seats. At one table, by
itself, two students t on a long side, and one person can sit on a short side.
1. Draw a picture to show at least another way the same number of students
could sit at the table shown above.
2. Draw 2 tables touching in a way dierent from the picture shown below.
Draw children seated in your picture. How many students are seated in
your picture?
