New Garner Lab Now Open for Materials Testing
Director of Exploration and Technical Services Sam
Johnson announced that the new Materials Laboratory
and Exploration Services Shop in Garner, North
Carolina, is now accepting materials for testing.
The address of the new lab is 2500 Waterfield
Drive, Garner, NC 27529. The lab can be reached by
telephone at (919) 760-4780. Employees are asked to
update their records so that samples are no longer sent
to the lab’s former location at Garner Quarry. Johnson
said that testing on any samples sent to the former
location may be delayed. If anyone has any questions
about the new facility or its capabilities, please call
Testing Lab Manager Kyle Brashear at (919) 760-4781.

Donald Cooper recently celebrated his
40th year of service. Cooper started
as a yard loader
operator on
July 30, 1979,
and has held
a number of
positions in the
years since.
“Donald is a
great asset to

Cooper
and continues to contribute to the
NC-East District,” said American Stone
Plant Manager Chris Hipp. Hipp said
Cooper has served as office manager
at Franklin Quarry and as office
manager and weighmaster at American
Stone Quarry. “His adaptability has
been his key to success and longevity,”
Hipp said.

Winterset Quarry Scale Loader Operator
Merrill Cornelison retired from Martin
Marietta on Aug. 31 after 41 years of service.
He began his career as a truck driver in 1978
and stayed with the company for the next four
decades, said Plant Manager Rick Sears,
while adding that Cornelison also served at
Earlham Quarry for several years as a driller.
“Merrill has enjoyed his time with Martin
Marietta and built many positive relationships
with our customers,” Sears said. “He will be
sorely missed.”
Doug Thomas of Alden Quarry in Iowa recently
celebrated his 40-year service anniversary.
He joined the company on June 5, 1979 – just
two weeks after graduating from high school.
Throughout his time at Martin Marietta, he
has held various positions, including plant
manager. Currently, he serves as a driller at
Alden Quarry. Thomas said he loves coming
to work every day because it is like a “wildlife
paradise.”

Dick Carman of Moore Quarry in Gilmore
City, Iowa, recently celebrated his 35th
year with Martin Marietta. When asked
about Carman’s time with the company,
Plant Manager Guy Dewey said, “During
Dick’s 35-year career he has held just
about every position in the quarry. His
knowledge and experience are greatly
appreciated.”
▼ ROCKY MOUNTAIN DIVISION
Martin Marietta employees from the division’s
Northern Asphalt and Paving group
recently participated in a local Bike to Work
Day event. Sales Representative Bernie
Lucero served breakfast to more than 120
participating bikers while other company
volunteers handed out Martin Marietta
branded safety lights for riders to attach to
their bikes. Construction-themed coloring
books and other industry-related gifts were
also given away. Project Coordinator Abby
Glaser said the event involved more than a
dozen Martin Marietta volunteers (pictured
below) and was supported by several others.
“Everyone was positive and grateful for
our involvement in Bike to Work Day,” she
said. “It was a great morning.”
