Chairman and CEO Ward Nye speaks to
an audience of about 350 in Raleigh. His
remarks were available to all Martin Marietta
employees via a simultaneous webcast.
25 Years of Success
Company Celebrates its Past While Looking Toward its Future
www.martinmarietta.com | September/October 2 2019 The Conveyor 7
Martin Marietta is safer than it
has ever been, more inclusive
than it has ever been and more
profitable than it has ever been.
That was the message from Chairman
and CEO Ward Nye during an Employee
Town Hall on Aug. 23 that reached
nearly 9,000 people across the country.
The event marked the first time Nye
addressed the entire company at once.
Company leaders say it won’t be his last.
“If you looked at the companies that
were in the Fortune 500 in 1999, within
a 10-year period, half of them were
gone,” he said while speaking to a live
audience of about 350 and a webcast
audience of many, many more. “Keep
that number in the back of your mind. It
gives you an even greater appreciation
for what has been the remarkable history
of this company and, what I am excited
to say, will be an even more spectacular
future.”
During his presentation, Nye mentioned
several employees by name,
including Plant Manager Curtis
Freeman at Red Oak Quarry in Georgia,
Ramiro Herrera Sr. and Ramiro
Herrera Jr. at Chico Quarry in Texas,
and Plant Operator Elijah Lawson at
Texas Quarry in Maryland.
He additionally discussed key company
highlights, such as the creation and
evolution of the Guardian Angel safety
program and the fact that Martin
Marietta has never cut or reduced a
dividend, before jumping into the
company’s historic growth and where
it may continue in the future.
After a Q&A session during which he
addressed a variety of questions from
employees across the company, Nye
introduced a five-minute video detailing
Martin Marietta’s business and commitment
to its people and communities.
Southeast Division Safety Manager
Allen Owen listened to the webcast and
watched the video with a team of about
20 employees at Auburn Quarry in
Alabama. He said the entire event was
well-received.
“It was very positive,” he said. “This
event really made us feel like we’re part
of a bigger picture – something beyond
just our work in the Alabama District or
Southeast Division.”
Auburn Quarry Senior Quality Control
Technician Michael Baker watched
alongside Owen and expressed a similar
sentiment.
“It was interesting to see the milestones
we’ve reached and the moves
we’ve made to get where we are today,
but what was really exciting was hearing
about the company’s future,” Baker said.
“This is a really great time to be part of
Martin Marietta because as the company
grows, we’ll be able to grow, too. The
opportunities are especially exciting for
those younger people who really want
to learn.”
Vice President of Investor Relations
Suzanne Osberg helped plan the
celebration alongside Senior Vice President
of Sustainability and Communications
Dana Guzzo, Executive Assistant to
the CEO Nanci Little, the company’s
division presidents and a host of others.
She said the company hopes to hold
similar town hall events on at least an
annual basis moving forward.
“These events are incredibly important,”
Osberg said. “We are one company.
We need to hear the same message so
that, with the same vision and the same
strategy, we can work toward the same
purpose. Every employee contributes
to this company’s success and every
employee deserves to hear our message
as directly as possible.” ▼
