Communications Intern Anna Collins started
work at the Corporate Office in August.
Communications Intern Follows Family’s Lead, Becomes 4th Generation Martin Marietta Employee
T he morning is cool at Fuquay
Quarry, where she stands in the
middle of the action with a pair of
tightly laced steel-toed Timberlands and
a pristine Martin hard hat. The noises of
the operation abound – the high-pitched
beeping of a yard loader backing up, a
team of miners discussing the day’s work,
the plant manager slamming shut his
door as he reaches to the bed of his truck
for wheel chocks.
Above all of the noise, however, is the
voice of her father.
“I wish your grandfather was here to
see this because this is cool. He would
have been so proud,” he says, beaming as
he looks to his daughter in her fresh PPE
(Personal Protective Equipment). In 1986,
her grandfather helped open the very
quarry in which she now stands.
Smiling, she turns to the group and
explains quickly, “My grandfather loved
this company. He even had someone
from Martin Marietta (Mike Jones) speak
at his funeral.”
Anna Collins began an internship
in Martin Marietta’s Sustainability and
Communications Department in August
and, in so doing, became the fourth
generation of her family – and the first
Collins woman – to work with the
company. Her story, and that of her
family, illustrates perfectly how a
career can help build a legacy.
The Collins clan begins its Martin Marietta
tale in the early 1940s when Myral

Collins walked into North Carolina’s
Belgrade Quarry looking for a job. He
was hired as a night maintenance man
and soon was joined by others from
his family.
Lemon Springs Office Manager
Donald Collins, Anna’s father, says he
can name 16 relatives who spent their
careers with the company and, were he
truly pressed, he could probably come
up with about a dozen more. The
number of Collins spouses and children
supported along the way, he says, is too
great to even contemplate. As the years
have progressed, Donald says, he and
his family – with the help of Martin
Marietta – have lived out the dream so
many in the country strive for.
