contributions over the years have been
immeasurable. “John has mentored
countless employees across the Martin
Marietta family and his commitment

Stone in Ohio celebrated four employees
who retired after decades of service with
the company. In total, the group had spent
nearly two centuries with Martin Marietta.
Company Teams Take Home Top Honors In Association’s Annual Awards Program
With multiple winners in all categories,
Martin Marietta was well represented on
this year’s list of National Stone, Sand
and Gravel Association (NSSGA) award
recipients. The NSSGA is the leading
voice and advocate for the aggregates
industry.
SAFETY
The NSSGA’s Safety Excellence Awards
recognize operations that maintain a
safe workplace, evidenced by safety
performance over a consecutive period
without an MSHA-reportable injury.
In Safety, the team at North Carolina’s
Onslow Quarry won gold-level honors
(medium-size operations), while Iowa
Grading 2 (medium) and North Carolina’s
Charlotte Quarry (large) received
bronze-level recognition.

Bonds Quarry Gives Back
Though small in size, Bonds Quarry in Concord, North Carolina, gave back to
their local community in a huge way. The quarry’s recent food drive was a
tremendous success, both in participation and the amount of food collected.
The crew delivered 1,022 pounds of food to the Cabarrus Crisis Center –
Cooperative Christian Ministry in Concord.

Richards retired on July 26 after 40 years
of service. On Aug. 1, Utility Equipment
Operator Rodney Beeker retired after 41
years of service. Kiln Burner John Conley
retired on Oct. 1 after 46 years of service.
On Nov. 1, Mechanic Rick Nickel retired
after 46 years of service.

Texas Quarry, part of the Mid-Atlantic
Division’s Maryland District, was a
gold-level winner in the NSSGA’s
Community Relations Awards competition.
St. Cloud Quarry in Minnesota and
Berkeley Quarry in South Carolina took
home silver-level honors.
Many Martin Marietta locations won
bronze-level community awards. From the
Southwest Division, bronze winners were
Jones Mill Quarry, Hunter Stone, Hatton
Quarry, Sawyer Quarry, Hugo Quarry,
Idabel Quarry, Broken Bow Quarry, Mill
Creek Granite, Mill Creek Limestone,
Bridgeport Stone and Bender Yard.
Mid-Atlantic Division locations
Burlington Quarry, Castle Hayne Quarry
and Churchville Quarry also took
home bronze-level honors, as did the
Southeast Division’s Cumming Quarry.
ENVIRONMENTAL
The NSSGA Environmental Excellence
Awards recognize operations that
actively demonstrate a commitment
to the exemplary use of environmental
controls and systems.
In the Environmental Excellence
category, North Carolina’s Benson
Quarry won gold recognition, while
Bonds Quarry, Midlothian Quarry,
Medford Quarry, Bridgeport Stone and
Tin Top Sand & Gravel took home
silver-level honors.
Bronze-level winners included Blake
Quarry, Hugo Quarry, Idabel Quarry,
Sawyer Quarry, Broken Bow Sand &
Gravel, Perryville Sand & Gravel,
Kerrville Sand & Gravel, Mill Creek
Granite and Medina Rock & Rail from
the Southwest Division; Anderson
Creek Quarry and Thomasville Quarry
from the Mid-Atlantic Division; and the
Rocky Mountain Division’s Portable
Crushing team.
