Iowa Team Earns Award for Support of Armed Services
Alden Quarry Plant Manager Troy Hambly
and Leadman Scott Cooper were recently
recognized by the Employer Support of
the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) for their
support of Quality Control Tech and Army
National Guardsman Shawn O’Hern.
“Troy Hambly always makes sure to
accommodate my military training because
he realizes that the training could save
my life some day,” O’Hern wrote while
nominating Hambly and Cooper. “Troy is
always interested in my efforts with the
National Guard and always interested
in how my family is doing. He takes the
time to ask about my plans with both the
National Guard and Martin Marietta.”
Daniel Fehr, area chair for the local
ESGR, said his organization gives out a

that he enjoys taking part in each event
because the honor is a meaningful way
for service members to recognize their
employers.
“In today’s environment, employers
make a lot of sacrifices for our soldiers
and that puts stress on any company,
whether it’s a large organization like
Martin Marietta or a local employer
with just 10 employees,” he said. “This
is our way – as soldiers – to recognize
our employers and let them know we’re
thankful for their support.”

Miners Recognized After
40 Years of Safe Work
Three Southeast Division miners joined a select
group in November, becoming the latest members
of the Martin Marietta team to earn the Mine
Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) 40-year
Miner Award.
O’Neal Quarry Yard Loader Operator Marvin
Lutz in Alabama, along with Ruby Quarry Mechanic
Eddie Edwards and North Georgia District Senior
Sales Representative Tom Thach in Georgia, were
each recognized for working more than 40 years
in the industry without a reportable incident.
“This honor is truly impressive,” said Southeast
Division Safety Manager Allen Owen. “When you
think about how safely these miners have worked
for more than 40 years, you can’t help but respect
their achievements and be thankful for the example
they’ve set for the rest of us.”
The men received their awards at MSHA’s annual
Southeast Mining Conference in Birmingham,
Alabama, on Nov. 5.

If you live in north Georgia, it was hard to miss Martin Marietta this past
October. Teams across the district participated in a variety of important
community events.
Tyrone Quarry participated in the Tyrone Founders Day Festival and
parade, which drew more than 4,000 people. Martin Marietta set up
an information booth and handed out branded items. A decorated haul
truck was also driven in the parade to the delight of attendees.
Elsewhere in the North Georgia District, the team at Cumming Quarry
hosted two different community events during the month, Warrenton
Quarry hosted a geology class from Georgia Southern University for a
tour and information session, and Lithonia Quarry hosted third-graders
from Rock Chapel Elementary School for a tour and activities day.
