From the Ground Up
“Our first delivery of ready mixed concrete was on Dec.
21, 2018, so it’s been quite a year for us,” said Hunter
Ready Mix Plant Supervisor Wyatt McCown. “We’ve spent
the past year building our customer base and training our
staff. We’ve built our site from the ground up.”
Nickolas stopped in to learn about the new Hunter Ready
Mix team’s progress on Oct. 8 and took the photo at left.
McCown (pictured at right) said he and the crew of 14 –
including Batchman Alex Fernandez (pictured at left) had a
great team story to tell.
“We’re now serving customers in a 30-mile radius,”
McCown said. “This year, we had a lot of residential
work, but in 2020, we’ll be supplying a very large highway
project. Our safety performance has also been strong,
so overall, things are going quite well.”

“We visited Bridgeport and Chico quarries on Oct.
9,” Nickolas said. “There is a very large project
underway at Chico to replace much of the plant.
These operations share a common border, so
this project will make these sites more efficient.
Eventually, Chico will handle most customers
coming to the site in trucks while the Bridgeport
team will primarily handle rail shipments and Chico’s
truck overflow. A third property, the Chambers
parcel, will supply primarily base material.”
Bridgeport Plant Manager Judsen Adams said
he and Chico Plant Manager Kyle Wesselhoft met
with Nye and Nickolas to discuss many of the
operations’ highlights from the past year, including
the Bridgeport team’s celebration of one year
without a reportable incident and the Chico team’s
Diamond Honor Award.
“We also discussed ROCKS (Recognition for
Continuous Knowledge of Safety), our employeeled
safety committee made up of 10 volunteer
employees,” Adams said. “These employees engage
their peers on safety topics and share their results
with site management.”
Company leadership expects the plant project to be
completed by the summer of 2021.
