Quivira National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1955 to provide and protect
vital habitat for migratory waterfowl in the Central Flyway. Its 22,135 acres features
rare inland salt marsh and sand prairie. The prairie is considered to be a diverse
community of hundreds of species of plants, with many species of mammals,
birds, reptiles and other organisms that are prairie-dependent. Roughly 7,000
acres of wetlands hosts thousands of Canada geese, meadowlarks and other
migratory birds as they pass through the refuge on their annual migrations.
