to the local Emergency Room. She had suffered a severe
anxiety attack. Determined to figure herself out, Michelle
checked into a mental health ward for a week long stay.
“It was the best vacation ever,” Michelle says wittingly. She
was given the opportunity to openly explore her feelings
and understand the root of her issues. Of the many
personal discoveries, Michelle realized she had developed
a fear of rejection when she was a child. To conquer this
reoccurring social phobia, Michelle began co-dependency
therapy and still uses practices she learned then, today.
“You have to be happy within yourself to be able to be
who you are and not worry what everybody else thinks
about you. Not to say I don’t still experience it. But, those
thoughts are momentary,” says Michelle.
Michelle made a home in Waynesville 8 years ago. She
purchased the Herren House Bed and Breakfast and
quickly made it into one of the most well-known, top inns
of Haywood County. Like many, Michelle had built her
identity around her profession. “That was my baby, and
that was how I established myself in this town. It’s not a
job. It’s a lifestyle. It was my lifestyle, and it was a great
lifestyle for me. It was a great lifestyle for my family,”
Michelle says. But almost as quickly as the success
came, it was ripped away from her completely. Due to
unforeseen bank issues, Michelle lost Herren House in
2015. Heartache and depression set in, but Michelle had
a handle on it. “I knew it would eventually subside,” says
Michelle. “You put your big girl panties on, and you move
on.”
