Why isn’t the horizon west area just more hotels,
outlet malls AND TOURIST ATTRACTIONS? Q:
TRASH Horizon West has a long history and a bright future. Decades ago, what we now call home was actually home
to thousands of acres of orange groves until a harsh series of repeated freezes in 1989 – an event that would set
into motion an unprecedented plan to develop the land into the master-planned community that we now know
as Horizon West. The citrus growers who owned the land created a unique and thoughtful development plan that
utilized the concepts Sir Ebenezer Howard published in 1898 of his conceptual "garden cities".
These landowners set out to change the course of history. In order for the county to approve the land-use plan
for something other than rural designation, they knew they had to present an intelligent and comprehensive
alternative or the fate of the land would succumb to urban sprawl - or in this area, potential "tourism sprawl".
The formation of Horizon West, Inc. in 1993 began the journey toward realizing a future for the land to
become something so much more! The mission of the not-for-profit corporation was to generate funds to hire a
land-planning firm to craft an approach that the county would approve.
The future of Horizon West began to take form when the plan was adopted in 1995. In the end, 23,000 acres were
designated for the development of villages, each with their own commercial mixed-use village center, neighborhood
schools and green spaces all served by a larger Town Center. Six villages were officially in the plans - what
we all now call: Lakeside, Bridgewater, Town Center, the Seidel area (F), Hickory Nut (H) and Ovation (I).
Their ideas led to them partnering with county officials to develop the first of its kind in Florida:
a "master plan" with a "New Suburban"-inspired concept. A series of villages with high density activity areas
provide community hubs, walkable conveniences and a sense of space, lessening our need to hop in the car and
drive on the main roads for each and every daily need. Horizon West is a shining and hopeful example of the
New Suburbanism philosophy in action and the lifestyle it can afford.
Thank you to the grove owners that worked together so that Horizon West could be!
RECYCLE
Did you know that putting the wrong materials in your
recycling cart causes the whole load to be rejected?
Orange County officials say 85% of all recyclables in the
unincorporated county are actually being sent to the landfill.
Let's change the statistic! Remember the Think 5 strategy
that focuses on the top five recyclable items:
• PLASTIC - Bottles and containers labeled #1 - #5
• METAL - Tin, aluminum, steel, and empty aerosol cans
• GLASS - Bottles and jars
• CARDBOARD - Flattened corrugated boxes
(with no food residue)
• PAPER - newspapers, advertisements, junk mail,
magazines, office paper, cereal/shoe/drink
boxes and milk/juice cartons
Plastic bags are the biggest culprit when it comes to
contaminating a load. They are NOT RECYCLABLE
in your recycling cart, BUT you can take them to any
Horizon West Publix location. Collection bins outside the
store accept grocery, zip top, produce and dry cleaning
bags as well as product/case wrap and more.
