KCE Bike Rodeo
STRESSES Fun, Health & Safety
D o you know why our elementary schools
are inside our neighborhoods? Well,
it's by design...
Per the Horizon West master plan crafted years ago –
elementary schools are used as a fundamental building
block for neighborhoods and as a focus of community life.
Each village in Horizon West is comprised of about four
neighborhoods, which include a mixture of residential,
schools and neighborhood-serving commercial.
These community hubs are to be connected by multi-use
paths and a park, ensuring a pedestrian-friendly walk
of around one-half mile or less from much of the the
neighborhood's housing. Keene's Crossing is a current
example of this intended vision that's been brought to life
in our still developing master-planned community.

The staff and PTO volunteers at Keene's Crossing
Elementary School love when students and families get
off the roads and onto the abundant bike paths in our
neighborhoods. Spirits run high when kids get a healthy start
to their day by biking or walking to school.
The past two Falls, PTO volunteers, Horizon West businesses and
our local county government, plus 300 students who put their bike
riding skills to the test gathered at the annual KCE Bike Rodeo.
The half-day clinic offers participants the chance to navigate
a comprehensive skills course, learn about bike and pedestrian
safety and get safety checks for their bikes and helmets.
While Winter Garden Wheel Works performed free bike
safety checks, members of the KCE PTO helped students
navigate a custom-made course in the school's
parking lot. In 2019, Citrus Church, Marco's Pizza,
Scoops N Smiles and Horizon West Happenings
donated four bikes for an onsite raffle.
Through Orange County's Walk-Ride-Thrive Program,
each participant received a safety helmet check
before hitting the course. For students whose helmets
were not a good fit, free replacement helmets were
provided by Orange County Sheriff's Office.
"We were thrilled to see so much interest in our
Bike Rodeo, not only by the students but from the
entire Horizon West community", said KCE PTO
President Maridith Cavanagh. "Our neighborhoods were
designed to be biked and walked, so we encourage our
kids to ride as much as they can, all school year."
