2020 NON-ROSTER INVITEES
Every year, Major League teams invite to spring training players who are not on the 40-man roster. Aside from the eight
minor leaguers mentioned on pages 26-27, this year’s Red Sox group features several players with significant major league
experience, including some who fans have already become familiar with at Fenway Park.
R.J. ALVAREZ | RHP | #60
BORN: June 8, 1991 in West Palm Beach, FL
R.J. Alvarez has appeared in 31 major league games with the Padres (2014)
and A’s (2015). The right-hander spent the entire 2019 season with Triple-A
New Orleans in the Miami Marlins organization and pitched in a career-high
50 games, all in relief, posting a 4.70 ERA with 15 saves and 65 strikeouts.
Last season, right-handed batters were 26-for-121 (.215) against Alvarez,
while left-handers hit .267 (20-for-75). Selected by the Angels in the third
round of the 2012 June Draft out of Florida Atlantic University, Alvarez is
18-23 with a 3.81 ERA and a .232 opponent batting average in 292 career
minor eague games.
JOHN ANDREOLI | OF | #67
BORN: June 9, 1990 in Worcester, MA
Outfielder John Andreoli brings plenty of New England connections to Fort
Myers. Born in Worcester, MA, he graduated from Saint John’s High School
in Shrewsbury, MA before attending the University of Connecticut. His
father, John, played football in the New England Patriots organization, and
his cousin, Daniel Bard, pitched for the Red Sox from 2009-13. He spent
the 2019 season at the Triple-A level with Rochester (Twins) and Tacoma
(Mariners), batting .255 with 16 home runs. He made his Major League
debut in 2018, batting .230 in 26 games between the Orioles and Mariners.
JETT BANDY | C | #47
BORN: March 26, 1990 in West Hills, CA
Bringing some major league catching experience to camp is Jett Bandy,
who has hit 16 home runs in 156 games between the Angels (2015-16) and
Brewers (2017-18). The right-handed hitter spent the entire 2019 season
with Triple-A Nashville in the Rangers organization and hit 13 home runs
in 71 games, also throwing out 18 of 68 (26.5%) attempted base stealers.
Selected by the Angels in the 31st round of the 2011 June Draft out of the
University of Arizona, Bandy has appeared in 141 games (123 starts) at
catcher in his Major League career, throwing out 31.6% (31 of 98) of runners
attempting to steal.
RUSNEY CASTILLO | OF | #38
BORN: July 9, 1987 in Ciego de Avila, Cuba
Rusney Castillo spent the entire 2019 season with Triple-A Pawtucket and
was once again one of the PawSox’ most valuable players. He appeared in a
career-high 120 games and batted .278 with 17 home runs, 64 RBI, and nine
outfield assists, making 82 starts in right field and 24 in center field. A righthanded
hitter, Castillo earned International League mid-season and postseason
All-Star honors following the 2017 and 2018 seasons. He has hit .325
with an .843 OPS against left-handed pitching for the PawSox since being
signed by Boston in August 2014. The Cuban native appeared in 99 Major
League games from 2014-16, making his first Opening Day roster in 2016.
