Sustainable Dining FRESH and DELICIOUS!
By Steve Fiske
Award winning, CURRENTS
Restaurant is a welcomed dining
experience reminiscent of a
neighborhood Bistro in Chicago’s
Lincoln Park district or upper
Eastside Manhattan Cafe. Located,
at 200 East Tarpon Avenue, in
Tarpon Springs. It is beautifully appointed with white linens,
a massive rich wooden sit down bar, an airy atmosphere
which epitomizes the definition of casual elegance. It features
large brocade windows and colorful visually artwork featuring
local artists, tastefully exhibited on its walls. The beautifully
designed bar is well stocked adding to CURRENTS
aesthetic balance. The corner location in the heart of Historic
Downtown Tarpon Springs business district, CURRENTS
affords patrons excellent and sometimes amusing views of
the pedestrians and traffic on Tarpon Ave. and the Pinellas
Bike Trail, which runs parallel to the restaurants’ West side.
The five pillars of any exceptional restaurant are; ambiance,
service, management, food and location.
CURRENTS has a solid foundation in all five departments.
The restaurant opened in July of 2009. Restaurateur Tracey
Swade, is a charming and competent owner who waited on
tables at the young age of 13 and moved through the ranks
as a college student to become a trainer and manager. She
says,” I wanted to open a restaurant that served quality food
at reasonable prices”. Indeed, she has done so!
“Everything is made to order, it’s all fresh every day”,
says Tracey, adding “we don’t serve any pre-portions and
we participate in the sustainable food program”. All of the
fish is caught daily, the produce is from local growers and
the menu is gluten friendly and vegetarian friendly. “It’s all
about the guest, we accommodate every dietary need”, says
Swade, adding, “we will prepare our cuisine to accommodate
almost any dietary or special need”. All the guest has to do
is ask. CURRENTS is popular with other restaurant owners,
who often may be seen dining at CURRENTS on any given
night.
This venue brings the gastronomical world to the guest,
one plate at a time. CURRENTS has an eclectic menu
and couples or large groups will be able to find something
to please every palate. All entrees come with a vegetable,
starch, and salad. Each one is special and has its own, “flavor
profile”, as Tracey calls it.
Duck lovers will love the juicy, succulent and sweet tender
meat along with the crispy skin that is served with a raspberry
vinaigrette and balsamic reduction, ($23.90). Start with
a cup of their famous lobster bisque, made with a paprika
cream base and real lobster meat. It is rich, smooth and just
the right balance of creamy stock ($4.00 a cup). Crab lovers
will be delighted with the sizable crab cake portions and
abundance of fresh meaty chunks of crab meat accompanied
with a sauce that provides the perfect finishing accent
($11.80). Guests may choose from “land and sea” selections,
each one equally sensational. From the Black Angus Buckhead
Beef N.Y.Strip Steak ($21.90) and Chicken Caprese
($15.90), to a tender Pork Tenderloin, served with our
signature side of jalapeno and goat cheese corn and home
made mashed
($16.20), to
Grouper Piccata
($22.80) and
Shrimp Dianne
with mushrooms, scallions,
Cajun seasonings and flavorful
rice ($19.60). It is all
memorable and will bring
you back for more.
Wine Wednesday guests receive $10 off any bottle on the
wine list with the purchase of an entrée! There is a wide
selection of international and domestic wines at reasonable
price points. Save room for the Award Winning Bread Pudding
for dessert.
